Greening Australia – one of our planet pillar charity partners – is on a mission to rebuild nature by connecting community, economy and environment in ways that benefit all. Donating to Greening Australia is a fantastic way to support their efforts, however, you might be wondering – how can I get my hands dirty?
One of the ways you can do this is by boosting biodiversity in your own backyard, which in turn adds ecological value to the rest of your neighbourhood. A fun way to do this is by putting up your green thumb and doing some planting, preferably using native seeds. It’s estimated that 40 per cent of the world’s plants are threatened with extinction, driven by climate change and habitat loss – so one of the best things you can do is choose local and help plant native plants in your backyard!
Over at the Flight Centre Foundation, some of our people have been making seed bombs for their own backyard using native seeds, so we’ve decided to share the instructions with you below:
How to make Seed Bombs*
What you need:
· Local, native seeds
· Peat-free compost
· Water
· Powdered clay (you can usually buy this from craft shops, but use clay soil if you can’t find any)
· Mixing bowl
How to do it:
1. In a bowl, mix 1 cup of seeds with 5 cups of compost and 2-3 cups of clay powder.
2. Slowly mix in water with your hands until everything sticks together, then roll mixture into firm balls.
3. Now for the fun bit – plant by throwing your seed bombs at bare parts of the garden!
Sprout times will vary depending on climate and weather conditions, so just sit tight and wait for your seeds to rear their (pretty)heads!
*Disclaimer: Seed Bombs are not an initiative of Greening Australia.
